Description

COMING IN JANUARY

I was backpacking through the Sobrarbe region of Spain on La Senda Pirenaica (Pyrenees Trail) and stopped overnight in Torla. What a find! It feels very remote because it’s not easy to get there by road. In the 15th century, settlers built a defensive tower (“Torla” means “tower”) on an outcrop overlooking the Rio Ara. By the 17th century, the rustic village expanded uphill onto the wooded ridge, with tiny streets lacing steep hills. There I found delightful terrazas and restaurants featuring the local specialty of juicy roast lamb. From Torla I took an early-morning shuttle into Parque Ordesa y Monte Perdido Natural Park and continued my hike toward the Mediterranean.

Narrow streets of a village in Spain

“Rick Steeves missed this one on his Best of Europe list. The tiny Pyrenean-style stone village of Torla, Spain, has quickly become one of my favorite places in the world.” (microtripping.com)
